Although Quentin Tarantino ranks director Sergio Leone‘s masterpiece, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, as his favorite spaghetti Western and has hailed it as perhaps “the best-directed movie” of all time, there is a certain kinship that he feels for “the other Sergio.” That was Sergio Corbucci, who made far grimier spaghetti Westerns during the same era, but always remained in the shadow of Leone. Tarantino has long been a vocal advocate for Corbucci’s work, describing him on the Video Archives podcast as “one of the great action filmmakers who ever lived,” and hailing him for being “at the tip-top of the action filmmaking game.” Tarantino ranked Corbucci’s Django as his third-favorite spaghetti Western ever, but he paid an overt homage to a different Corbucci movie in his own work.
