Steven Spielberg recently made a long-awaited return to sci-fi, but like the genre’s other prodigal son, Ridley Scott, his comeback wasn’t as successful as he’d have liked. While Scott’s new movie, The Dog Stars, has underperformed commercially and received mediocre reviews, Spielberg’s far more expensive Disclosure Day barely broke even and left audiences largely indifferent. Spielberg hasn’t delivered an outright hit since Ready Player One, which was released nearly a decade ago. But it’s easy to forget that Ready Player One was released at a time when Spielberg was going through a similar lull, with movies such as War Horse and The BFG both falling short of the mark at the box office. It was during this decade that he attempted to launch a franchise with a movie that honored some of his most iconic past work. The movie in question is currently streaming for free in the United States.
