At some point, a comeback turns into a procession, and then it turns into a victory lap. That’s exactly how this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards feel, as the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awardswent to the runaway favorite. It’s hard to find an actor now who is more closely associated with nerve-shredding medical tension than Noah Wyle. He spent more than a decade playing Dr. John Carter on ER before returning to the genre like a conquering hero 20 years later with The Pitt, HBO Max’s spiritual successor to ER, and that return has ended up giving Wyle one of television’s biggest awards.
