Death Note begins by asking viewers to entertain an uncomfortable question: Is Light Yagami actually wrong? The answer should be obvious, considering he appoints himself the ultimate authority over who deserves to live, but his earliest victims make the debate intentionally complicated. Light targets violent criminals and imagines a world in which innocent people no longer need to fear them. His methods are monstrous, but the people he kills make it easy to understand why Kira gains supporters.
