HBO’s Near-Perfect 9-Episode Miniseries Became the Critics’ Favorite When It Broke From the Formula

There are certain IPs that you should only tackle if you’re absolutely confident that what you deliver will be nothing less than a masterpiece. Watchmen is one of those. The original graphic novel is already an iconic comics story, so why would anyone ever mess with it? When HBO announced its own Watchmen series, fans were naturally worried for that exact reason. In the end, however, what Damon Lindelof did with the miniseries caught everyone by surprise, because it isn’t an adaptation, nor a retelling, not even a proper sequel. Instead, it “remixes” the original similarly to how the graphic novel did to the real world back in 1985, delivering an almost surrealist take on the modern zeitgeist that is damn near perfect.
