There is a wonderfully primitive test for a first-person shooter. Give someone the controller, point them toward trouble, and see how long it takes before their posture changes. The great ones get into your hands before they get into your head. Suddenly you are leaning around corners in real life, shouting directions at friends who absolutely cannot hear you through the television, or restarting a checkpoint because that last twenty seconds felt so good you want another go immediately.
