J.J. Abrams’ ‘Jurassic Park’ Replacement Officially Roars to Life on Prime Video

While 2026 has been an excellent year for the horror genre, with Obsession and Backrooms paving the way for the new Resident Evil to shatter expectations, the same cannot be said about a handful of major sci-fi movies. Three icons of the sci-fi genre — Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott, and J.J. Abrams — all returned with new movies after extended gaps. Each of their films, however, fell short of box-office expectations. Spielberg’s Disclosure Day grossed around $240 million worldwide against a reported budget of $115 million, just about breaking even considering marketing and distribution overheads. However, it turned out to be his lowest-grossing sci-fi movie of the 21st century. More recently, Scott’s The Dog Stars emerged as one of the biggest bombs of the year, grossing just $38 million worldwide against a reported budget of more than $100 million. Abrams, on the other hand, returned to the sci-fi genre as a producer, and his new movie didn’t exactly break out. That said, it recently debuted on the PVOD market, where it appears to have gotten off to a terrific start.
