Luc Besson made this movie when big-budget evergreen sci-fi films like Aliens, BladeRunner, and Terminator2 had established their footing. For a big-budget sci-fi film, avoiding those darker themes and instead leaning into bright colors, couture fashion, and European comic-book design was a gamble, but it paid off. In fact, it paid off super well. The film starred Bruce Willis in the main role, and it raked in $263 million at the global box office. Besson, however, despite all that success and with all his certainty, has repeatedly maintained that it does not have the DNA for a sequel.
