Binance and Coinbase Join West Africa Sweep, but $11M Is Only Flagged

Binance and Coinbase collaborated with international law enforcement in a West Africa scam sweep, resulting in 28 arrests and identifying over $11 million in cryptocurrency funds flagged for potential freezing.

Binance and Coinbase Join West Africa Sweep, but $11M Is Only Flagged

That $11 million figure is the one making the rounds, though it represents money marked for potential freezing rather than cash extracted from a fraudster’s account. Through the Binance Coinbase West Africa scam sweep, authorities in Nigeria and Ghana apprehended 28 individuals while the two major exchanges collaborated on identifying more than $11 million in funds eligible for possible freezing. Investigators claim these targeted networks orchestrated cryptocurrency investment schemes and other fraudulent operations directed at targets in the United Kingdom, the United States, and other regions.

That headline sum of $11 million in crypto assets identified by private-sector allies designates funds flagged for potential freezes rather than verified recoveries. Furthermore, officials noted that certain cryptocurrency assets were seized, though they omitted details regarding their valuation or specific types.

Binance Coinbase West Africa scam sweep paired exchange intelligence with arrests in Ghana and Nigeria

Organized by the National Crime Agency of the U.K., the collaborative initiative brought together technology companies and law enforcement agencies. According to CoinDesk, the U.S. Department of Justice described the effort as the inaugural joint operation centered on West Africa.

In Ghana, local law enforcement detained 19 people within Sasaabi, situated close to Accra, while confiscating 303 electronic devices. Meanwhile, Nigerian authorities took nine additional suspects into custody. The DOJ noted that the sweep targeted scam operations involving crypto investment fraud, though these detentions do not constitute legal proof of guilt.

Additionally, the NCA reported that the operation uncovered 117 trafficking survivors in Ghana who were awaiting transport back to Nigeria. Contributors also supplied law enforcement agencies with intelligence regarding upwards of 30 suspected fraudulent compounds.

Exchanges helped trace funds, but the flagged total is not money recovered

Coinbase reported assisting investigators by tracking illicit capital, aiding asset freezes, and building intelligence profiles. The platform also tracked down more than 65 active victims of fraud, successfully intercepting over $415,000 in threatened losses.

Binance participated alongside blockchain intelligence organizations including Chainalysis, TRM Labs, and Elliptic. TRM Labs reported uncovering a massive peer-to-peer laundering operation. While private industry collaborators tagged more than $11 million for potential freezing, this metric denotes targeted funds rather than officially secured recoveries.

Officials declined to reveal the worth or nature of the confiscated cryptocurrencies. The exact totals successfully frozen or secured remain undisclosed.

Victims and social platforms were also part of the response

Financial tracking and police detentions formed only one segment of the West Africa digital asset scam initiative. Meta announced the deletion of over 3.7 million Facebook and Instagram profiles, pages, and communities, the vast majority of which allegedly utilized impersonation tactics against users in Britain and America.

These purges highlight the reliance of the accused fraud rings on social media infrastructure. Meanwhile, the rescue of victims demonstrates that the mission also tackled human trafficking. According to the NCA, the 117 individuals discovered in Ghana were awaiting return journeys to Nigeria.

What investigators and exchange customers should watch next

For law enforcement, the primary uncertainty is whether intelligence concerning suspected fraud hubs will translate into broader legal actions, and whether any flagged capital will ultimately be frozen or reclaimed. Additional specifics regarding the crypto asset seizures may emerge if officials decide to publicize their worth or asset types.

For exchange participants, the implications are more straightforward. The situation highlights how corporate entities can support probes via tracking and intelligence gathering. However, there is no indication that the accounts or balances of regular Binance or Coinbase users were impacted.

Binance and Coinbase collaborated alongside a broader coalition comprising analytics providers, law enforcement, and Meta. Whether this operation yields further detentions or asset freezes remains the next major milestone to observe.
