Coinbase has advanced a significant expansion of its U.S. derivatives facilities following a decision by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to approve Coinbase Clearing LLC as a Derivatives Clearing Organization.
Granted on Sept. 28, the clearance permits the newly formed entity to handle fully secured commodity options contracts, commodity futures, and commodity swaps within the framework of Coinbase’s established regulated commodities operations.
This registration creates a trio of affiliated Coinbase entities fulfilling distinct functions across the U.S. derivatives landscape: Coinbase Financial Management operates as a Futures Commission Merchant, Coinbase Derivatives functions as a Designated Contract Market, and Coinbase Clearing provides clearing functions specifically for the products it is authorized to handle.
According to Coinbase, this setup of registered businesses enables the firm to deliver a fully integrated suite of services for trading regulated derivatives.
A central feature of the newly formed clearinghouse is its reliance on USDC as the settlement currency. Coinbase highlights that Coinbase Clearing functions as the first USDC-native clearinghouse, granting users the ability to execute trade settlements around the clock.
The CFTC has approved the launch of Coinbase Clearing LLC, our own USDC-native clearinghouse.

Official CFTC registry records list the DCO, verifying its authorization to clear fully collateralized offerings. However, the agency does not utilize the descriptor “first USDC-native” within its own documentation regarding Coinbase. Issued by Circle, USDC operates as a dollar-pegged digital currency capable of trading outside traditional banking hours.
This regulatory green light is limited to specific segments of the exchange’s derivatives division. While Coinbase Clearing is authorized for fully collateralized derivatives, other derivatives offered through Coinbase will continue relying on third-party providers for clearing services.

Representatives for Coinbase noted that upcoming single-stock perpetual products will likewise be managed by third-party providers and must undergo their own independent regulatory assessments.
Before the DCO designation was granted, Nodal Clear served as the clearing partner for Coinbase Derivatives. Earlier regulatory roots trace back to LMX Labs, which rebranded to FairX prior to its acquisition by Coinbase in 2022. The exchange was subsequently rebranded to Coinbase Derivatives in December 2023.

While the new clearing solution supplies Coinbase with an alternative operational route for targeted products, it does not supplant all existing clearing operations.
Data from the CFTC shows that Coinbase Clearing submitted its DCO registration paperwork on November 14, 2025. The submission package featured draft rulebooks, accompanying regulatory documentation, and organizational disclosures detailing the firm’s business structure. By official Commission order, Coinbase Clearing was formally incorporated into the roster of registered DCOs on September 28, 2026.

Coinbase has yet to disclose specifics regarding which specific contracts will transition to its proprietary clearinghouse or when additional offerings might launch. The company intends to upgrade infrastructure supporting existing instruments while gradually rolling out further regulated, fully collateralized derivatives.
At present, the approval sanctions the immediate clearing of USDC-priced derivatives transactions on Coinbase’s regulated American derivatives marketplace. It leaves the governing regulations for other margin-dependent products or proposed equity perpetuals entirely unchanged.
